Self Care for Stress Relief

Engaging in self care activities is a great way to effectively manage feelings of stress and anxiety. Finding what works for you may require a bit of exploring and trying out various techniques and practices. What matters most is regularly dedicating time to your self care. Remember, you deserve to prioritize your mental health and wellbeing!

Read on to explore 3 of my favorite stress relieving activities:

  1. Deep Breathing and Meditation. Deep breathing exercises and meditation are effective techniques for quickly calming the mind and reducing stress and anxiety. When you feel your experience of stress and anxiety taking over, find a quiet and comfortable space, close your eyes, and take slow, deep breaths. Try making your exhale breath longer than your inhale to further promote deep relaxation and nervous system relaxation. Focus on your breath and practice breathing out tension and worries. 2. Physical Exercise. Remember, movement really is medicine! Engaging in regular physical exercise is not only beneficial for your physical health but also for your mental well-being. Exercise releases endorphins, which are natural mood boosters and very effective in soothing feelings of stress and anxiety. Choose activities that you enjoy, such as walking, jogging, yoga, dancing, or any form of exercise that gets your body moving. Aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise most days of the week and notice how you feel with movement as part of your routine!
  3. Take time for hobbies or other relaxing activities.  Sometimes, we need self care that is simple, indulgent, and totally relaxing. Give yourself permission to enjoy activities that bring you happiness and help you to relax. This may be reading a book, listening to music, painting, gardening, cooking, watching an uplifting movie, or any other hobby that allows you to unwind and focus on something enjoyable. Engaging in activities you love can distract your mind from stressors and provide a sense of fulfillment and satisfaction. Leave the guilt behind and take the time you need to unwind and enjoy!

Remember, self-care is personal, so feel free to explore different activities and find what works best for you. Notice which activities and practices feel supportive to you, and which ones contribute to overall stress relief. Consider writing them down and creating a list of ‘self care for stress relief’ activities that you can turn to in moments of need. Above all, know that it is essential to prioritize self-care regularly in order to maintain a healthy, balanced life.
